Lithuania's Hill of Crosses:

Rising from the quiet countryside of northern Lithuania, the remarkable Hill of Crosses is one of the most unusual and moving pilgrimage sites in Europe, if not the world.
Located about 12 kilometers (7 miles) from the city of Šiauliai and roughly 220 kilometers (about 137 miles) northwest of the capital, Vilnius, the hill is covered with tens of thousands of crosses of every imaginable size and design. Wooden crosses, metal crucifixes, rosaries, statues, and handwritten prayers crowd together so densely that they form a powerful visual landscape of faith and remembrance. For many visitors, the first sight of the hill is striking — an overwhelming sea of crosses rising from the earth.
The origins of the Hill of Crosses date back to the 19th century, when crosses were first placed there as memorials for Lithuanians who died during uprisings against the Russian Empire. Over time, the site evolved into a powerful symbol of national identity, spiritual resistance, and hope.
During the Soviet occupation, when religious expression was heavily restricted, authorities repeatedly bulldozed the hill and removed thousands of crosses. Yet locals continued to return under cover of night to place new ones, quietly rebuilding the site again and again. This persistence transformed the hill into a lasting symbol of Lithuania’s resilience and devotion to their faith.
Today, pilgrims and travelers from around the world visit the Hill of Crosses to leave their own symbols of faith and remembrance. While the majority of markers are Christian crosses, the site has gradually become more inclusive, reflecting the diversity of visitors who come here. Among the many tributes, visitors can occasionally spot symbols from other traditions, including the Star of David, alongside prayer beads, plaques, and personal memorials. Walking among the countless crosses (some weathered by time and others newly placed) creates a powerful and contemplative atmosphere, making the Hill of Crosses one of Lithuania’s most unforgettable cultural and spiritual landmarks.
