Gouda is an historic city in the Netherlands known for its picturesque canals, mediaeval buildings, and lively market square. (Sorry if this is ruining decades of pronunciation, but Gouda is not pronounced as “Gooda”, but instead “Gowda” and the ‘g’ sound is the harsh guttural Dutch g sound.) Its most famous export is Gouda cheese, one of the world’s best-known cheeses, traditionally traded at the weekly cheese market held in front of the 15th century Town Hall. The city is also known for stroopwafels (pronounced as “stropewafels”), candles, and stained glass windows in St. John’s Church.
